    Comments

The lithograph 'Die Hände' is one of Edvard Munch's most symbolically charged and at the same time most enigmatic early prints. In the highly reduced, almost abstract composition, more than twenty hands and arms appear, directed toward a woman standing in the centre. Some seem to point, others try to grasp. The reduction to the essential is typical of Munch's approach to printmaking as a medium of expression. The lithograph leaves room for projection: it is not an illustration, but a mirror of emotional states. The woman at the centre becomes the desired and desirable object, the femme fatale who dominates the scene.

The lithograph was created during a productive period in which Munch immersed himself in printmaking techniques and the symbolic language of the fin de siècle. Technically, the lithograph is characterised by its clear black-and-white execution. The lines are strong but not ornamental; the composition appears almost modernist.

'Die Hände' is a remarkable example of Munch's ability to address existential themes in a concise, symbolically charged form.

The striking and very rare sheet was printed by A. Liebmann Buch u. Steindruckerei in Berlin.

Steindruckerei in Berlin.
