    Comments

In 'Die Frauen und das Gerippe', Munch brings together two female figures of different ages around a skeleton, which symbolises transience. The two women, one young and the other more mature, represent the different phases of life, while the skeleton symbolises the inevitable end. With delicate contour lines and symbolic clarity, Munch creates a memento mori that encapsulates the central themes of love, time and transience - themes that are so integral to his Frieze of Life - in a quiet and haunting image.

The fingerprints suggest that this is an early trial proof, produced by Wilhelm Felsing in Berlin.
