    Comments

In 'Der Tod und das Weib' Munch synthesises the concepts of love, fear and transience into an existential pictorial theme. The radical juxtaposition of life and death, body and bones lends the scene symbolic power. It is a central work from Munch's Frieze of Life, which addresses the inevitability of the end.

Now the motif features a border with stylised sperm and embryo heads.

An early, fine impression of the second state, printed by Felsing in Berlin.
