    Comments

In 'Der Tod und das Weib' Munch synthesises the concepts of love, fear and transience into an existential pictorial theme. The radical juxtaposition of life and death, body and bones lends the scene symbolic power. It is a central work from Munch's Frieze of Life, which addresses the inevitability of the end.

The present lot is a wonderful impression of the first state, printed by Sabo or Angerer according to Schiefler.
