"Mao" is an outstanding example of the connection between political iconography and Pop Art. Warhol created this series in the early 1970s, after President Richard Nixon visited China in 1972. This historic event inspired Warhol to engage with the image of the then Chinese head of state, Mao Zedong. However, "Mao" is more than just a portrait. It is a commentary on the power of images in the 20th century and the role of cult figures in an increasingly media-driven world. Warhol transforms an authoritarian figure into an object of Western pop culture, creating a work that both fascinates and provokes thought.
