Colour woodcut on Kumohadamashi Japan paper by Heizaburo Iwano
69.8x49.8 cm, printing block; 88.5x72.5 cm, sheet size; 97x80 cm, frame
Lower right signed by the artist in pencil "Franz Gertsch", left numbered "1/2"
Entered in the catalogue raisonné of woodcuts of the Franz Gertsch Archive under the number 26/B
The Eberhard W. Kornfeld Collection, Bern
Below the mouth a small spot, which in this prominent position can also be seen as a beauty mark. Very fine print quality and condition. In the artist's original frame
Based on his large-format oil paintings, woodcuts of the same subjects were also created. This is also the case with the model Silvia, who was immortalized in three photorealistic paintings. The present woodcut is based on the painting "Silvia II" from 2000, which is held in the Museum Kurhaus Kleve. Each print from the linden wood block was hand-pulled in collaboration with Nik Hausmann, always with different colouring, so that the prints are in fact unique pieces. Only five impressions were made: two as the edition (including the sheet offered here) and three trial proofs. Very beautiful and rare print in old rose.
We thank the Gertsch family for the valuable information on this work.
