    Comments

"Boucherie chevaline à Paris" is part of the series of works created between 1949 and 1951 featuring the motif of butcher shops and meat halls. In a draft letter dated November 5, 1974, to the writer and friend Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990), the artist writes: "Du hast noch 3 Bilder von mir, die ich gerne zurückholen möchte. Eine kleine Pferdemetzgerei, in Paris gemalt. [...]." (In: Paola Tedeschi-Pellanda/Patrizia Guggenheim, erroneously listed under no. 587). The work mentioned in this letter is the present oil painting, whose location, according to the catalogue raisonné, was previously unknown. According to the dedication on the reverse of the work, Dürrenmatt gave the painting to his family doctor Alfred Schertenleib and his wife Margrit: " AN MARGRITTLI / UND FRED / SCHERTENLEIB / VON IHREM / FREUND Friedrich Dürrenmatt". On the reverse there is also a small pencil drawing by Dürrenmatt depicting a portrait of Varlin, characteristically shown with his glasses. The two friends portrayed each other during a visit by Varlin and his wife to Dürrenmatt in May/June 1967 in Neuchâtel (In: Paola Tedeschi-Pellanda/Patrizia Guggenheim no. 1198). We thank Patrizia Guggenheim for her helpful information about the work.
