Colour zincograph on wove paper, trial proof for poster

29.5x24 cm, image and sheet size

    Catalogues Raisonné

Wittrock P28/b (of C). Adriani 196/II (of III). Delteil 365/II (of III)

    Provenance

Auction Christie's, London, 29 March 2011, lot 108, where acquired by

Collection Guillaume de Toulouse-Lautrec, Switzerland, with the collector's stamp on the reverse , Lugt 3868

    Private collection Switzerland

    Condition

This unique trial proof is of very good printing quality with vivid colour intensity. The sheet is partially trimmed at the edges. Some minor, pale foxing on the front, including on the left cheek, above the left eyebrow and mainly visible in the background. Foxing on the reverse. In very good condition

    Comments

This sheet is a trial proof and thus a unique impression, based on two small differences in the stone: the contour of the nose appears to be missing and there is an additional line near the lady’s mouth. In this form, the sheet is extremely rare.

Originally, the sheet was probably printed with the copyright notice at the lower left, now trimmed here, but certainly still before the inscription for the clients "Ault & Wiborg Co", an American ink manufacturer. The sheet is the artist’s smallest colour poster. Depicted are Emilienne d'Alençon (1869-1946) and Gabriel Tapié de Céleyran (1869-1930) in the "Cabaret des Décadents".

    Provenienz

Auktion Christie's, London, 29. März 2011, Los 108, dort erworben von

Slg. Guillaume de Toulouse-Lautrec, Schweiz, rückseitig mit dem Sammlerstempel, Lugt 3868

    Privatsammlung Schweiz

    Zustand

In sehr guter Erhaltung
