In the summer of 1895, an art competition was announced by the gallery Boussoud, Valadon et Cie. For the poster announcement of the Napoleon biography "Histoire de Napoléon I." by William Milligan Sloans, published in 1896 in the New York magazine "Histoire de Napoléon I.". Toulouse-Lautrec took part in the competition, but the design was rejected. After unsuccessful attempts to place the design elsewhere, the artist decided to have an edition printed at his own expense by Edward Ancourt.
