    Comments

An extremely rare sheet, as of the five examples known to Wittrock, three were signed and dated by May Belfort (circa 1872-1929) and sent as Christmas and New Year cards. The Irish singer was one of the stars of the Parisian casinos and variety theatres, but also performed in Russia, South Africa, and the USA. Her portrait was created by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in 1898 (Wittrock 252). As early as 1895, on the occasion of her first appearance at the Petit Casino, he designed a poster featuring the artist in a bright red dress and her ever-present black cat (Wittrock P 14).
