Collection Fondation Le Corbusier, Paris, inv. No. 284
Sheet slightly browned, traces of old mounting on the reverse. In impeccable condition
Since 1923, Louis Soutter was in an institution in Ballaigues in the Vaud Jura. He had hardly any contact with the outside world. Only his cousin, the famous architect Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret), visited him in this asylum—and did so for years. He was also the one who later managed the artist’s estate. The beautiful and richly executed sheet in Louis Soutter’s typically scribbly manner, and titled by him by hand "Au Matin", shows, according to the title, five figures in the morning. The depicted figures form a group, but without any closer connection to one another. From his own experience, Soutter knew the feeling of isolation; he often felt misunderstood and lonely in the home. The sheet offered here comes from the former collection of Le Corbusier.

Nachlass des Künstlers
Slg. Fondation Le Corbusier, Paris, Inv.-Nr. 284
Blatt leicht gebräunt, rückseitig Montierungsreste. In tadelloser Erhaltung
