The port of Marseille was a pictorial motif with which Paul Signac engaged artistically on several occasions. The drawing offered here shows the entrance to this seaport in the south of France. On the right of the composition, a three-masted ship can be seen. At the center of the composition is probably the neo-Gothic church of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, inaugurated in 1888, with its two pointed towers. On the far left, the imposing tower of the Saint-Jean fortress is visible. This fortification with tower was built around 1660 under Louis XIV.
The finished painting (1911) related to our study was acquired by the French state in 1920 and has belonged to the collections of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris since 1977. Since 1983 it has been on deposit at the Musée Cantini in Marseille.
