Template for the final vignette in: Gustave Flaubert, "La Tentation de Saint Antoine, illustré par Odilon Redon", Paris, Ambroise Vollard 1938, p. 206. Redon became enthusiastic about Flaubert’s text very early on, which was first published in 1874. In total, he produced three different series of illustrations in original lithographs: in 1888, 10 sheets and a frontispiece (Mellerio 83-93), in 1889, 6 sheets and a frontispiece (Mellerio 94-100), and in 1896, 24 sheets (Mellerio 134-157). Around 1900, Ambroise Vollard also became interested in the last major publication of 24 lithographs from 1896. He had a separate edition of 24 sheets printed, which, however, only appeared in book form in 1938. In addition to the lithographs, the book was to be enriched with woodcuts after drawings by Redon. After 1900, Redon fulfilled this wish and handed over 15 drawings to Ambroise Vollard, but these were lost at Vollard and only resurfaced around 1938. They were cut in wood and printed in the 1938 book edition. (In: among others, Ambroise Vollard, Recollections of a Picture Dealer, New York 1978, p. 257).

(In: u. a. Ambroise Vollard, Recollections of a Picture Dealer, New York 1978, S. 257).
