    Comments

In 1939, Picasso created a series of six colour etchings, mostly executed in aquatint, featuring the portrait of his companion Dora Maar (1907-1997). These prints are a rarity in the artist's oeuvre for this period, as there are very few prints in this technique. The present sheet is probably the most beautiful portrait of Dora Maar from this series. It is a print from the edition, which was presumably pulled in 1939 or, more likely, in 1942 in an edition of 80 copies. The edition was only discovered in Picasso's estate after his death; previously, only a very few trial proofs appeared on the market. Our sheet was printed from five copper plates in blue, brown, yellow, red, and black. For this, the same paper was used that Picasso also employed for printing the "Suite Vollard".
