    Comments

The work on offer is a study for the painting "Adieu Von" from 1939 (CR 224).

The composition consists of flat, geometric, and coloured forms. Its intense colouring indicates an in-depth study for the painting with colour specifications (FLC 3807). The subject clearly recalls "Deux lutteurs dans les rochers" (CR 136), a painting from 1932 in which Le Corbusier wrestles with his cousin in the rocky terrain of the Bay of Arcachon—observed by his wife Yvonne, who is also depicted. In the present work, the human figures are missing. However, it is conceivable that Le Corbusier symbolically preserved their presence in the geometric forms—such as in the inserted triangles.

The painting created in 1939 remained in the artist's possession throughout his life. After the death of his wife in 1957, he gave the work a deeply personal significance: three days after her passing, he titled it "Adieu Von 8 octobre 10 1/4h–57". The date and time mark the moment when Yvonne's body left their shared apartment—a silent, moving farewell in the form of an artistic legacy.
