    Comments

The drawing "Tanzstunde" belongs to Paul Klee's late works, created in his final year, which was marked by his severe illness and approaching death. Despite physical limitations, the work displays a remarkable vitality. With a reduced, almost childlike line, Klee lets two figures dance—a grown person and a child. The title lends the scene a sense of lightness, but also stands in contrast to the existential depth of his late work. As in many of his last pieces, Klee here combines subtle irony with existential reflection. The gazes of the two dancers are peculiarly directed towards each other. With simple artistic means, "Tanzstunde" thus becomes a poetic allegory that wonderfully expresses Klee's incomparable powers of observation.
