    Comments

Of all the cities Augusto Giacometti visited during his lifetime, he spent the most time in Venice. He first came to the lagoon city in 1913. During the 1920s, he traveled there almost annually, and later, as a member of the Swiss Art Commission, he visited Venice repeatedly. It is all the more remarkable that there are only a small number of depictions of this city by Giacometti. Our finely nuanced view shows the basin of San Marco with the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and its basilica to the south. At the landing stage in the foreground, a passenger ship and three gondolas are moored. Furthermore, on the left half of the image, the stern of a cruise ship is probably depicted. On the harbor wall, a delicate lantern accentuates the dramatic scene.
