    Comments

Our sheet, which resembles the etching "A la belle étoile sur le pont de Londres" from 1872 (see J. Valmy-Baysse, "Gustave Doré", Paris 1930, p. 297), Depicts with unsparing realism the misery in the London slums that the artist visited from 1868 onwards. In the following year, Doré prepared illustrations for the book publication "London: a pilgrimage", for which his English friend William Blanchard Jerrold (1826-1884), journalist at the "Daily News" and later at the "Illustrated London News", wrote the texts. In preparation for this joint work, the two friends undertook the so-called "pilgrimage" into the districts of London where luxury met bitter poverty. Blanchard Jerrold recounted an anecdote related to the drawing: "Once we went to London Bridge at midnight and stayed there for a good hour while he (Gustave Doré) meditated and admired the two views that met our eyes: above the bridge and below it. He was very moved by the poor human beings sleeping huddled together on the stone benches." (In: B. Jerrold, Life of Gustave Doré, London 1891, p. 153).

The book published in 1872 with the 138 illustrated Doré drawings, which corresponded to the new aesthetics of social realism at the end of the 19th century, attracted great attention at the time: The images in this publication are considered masterpieces by Gustave Doré (see R. Bonnefoit, in: Ausstellungskatalog, Jean Starobinski, Largesse (Parti pris), Musée du Louvre, Paris 1994, no. 72).

(In: B. Jerrold, Life of Gustave Doré, London 1891, S. 153).

R. Bonnefoit, in: Ausstellungskatalog, Jean Starobinski, Largesse (Parti pris), Musée du Louvre, Paris 1994, Nr. 72).
