    Comments

Degas created this print in seven states of reworking. Through various technical interventions, the artist achieved different tonalities and structures; the composition ranges from a relatively open abstract space with three figures to a dense illusionistic stage set with five figures (see also the enclosed impression of the cancelled plate). The early states resemble Degas' fan pictures from 1878 to 1880, in which the small-format dancers appear and disappear among the enveloping surfaces. The fully developed final state corresponds in style and conception to the paintings and pastels from the same period. Of the present second state, only this impression is known, so it is probably unique.
