While the first state of this print was executed in vernis mou, in the present second state Degas also intervened with drypoint and roulette. Only two impressions of the second state are known: one is on loan to the Harvard Art Museums, the other is the present one. After various reworkings, the final, fifth state was intended for publication in a small catalogue for the Livret du Salon 1877 of the Amis des Arts de Pau, which, in addition to this sheet, contained ten further original graphic works by various artists.
