With slight studio traces, a minimal offset of the red stamp at the front, a small puncture at the uppermost edge, the left sheet edge irregular, traces of an old mounting on the reverse. Overall in good condition
This sheet is probably the artist's first printmaking work. Degas showed a very early interest in this technique, inspired by regular visits to the print room and by advice from Prince Grégoire Soutzo, a friend of his father's who was himself a great collector of old prints and an amateur printer. Degas appears to have made only three impressions of this subject in total. Two of them appeared in the Degas sale of 1918, one of which is the present sheet; a third was pasted by Degas into a notebook. Extremely rare impression from the unpolished plate.

Mit leichten Atelierspuren, vorne ein minimer Abklatsch des roten Stempels, ein Löchlein am obersten Rand, die linke Blattkante unregelmässig, rückseitig mit Spuren einer alten Montierung. Insgesamt in sehr schöner Erhaltung
Bei diesem Blatt handelt es sich wahrscheinlich um die erste druckgraphische Arbeit des Künstlers. Degas interessierte sich schon sehr früh für diese Technik, angeregt durch regelmässige Besuche im Kupferstichkabinett und durch Ratschläge von Prinz Grégoire Soutzo, eines Freundes seines Vaters, der selbst ein grosser Sammler alter Graphik und ein Amateur-Drucker war. Von diesem Sujet scheint Degas insgesamt nur drei Abzüge gemacht zu haben. Zwei davon figurieren in der Vente Degas von 1918, wovon eines das vorliegende ist, ein drittes wurde von Degas in ein Notizbuch eingeklebt. Äusserst seltener Druck von der ungestrichenen Platte.
