    Comments

This sheet is probably the artist's first printmaking work. Degas showed a very early interest in this technique, inspired by regular visits to the print room and by advice from Prince Grégoire Soutzo, a friend of his father's who was himself a great collector of old prints and an amateur printer. Degas appears to have made only three impressions of this subject in total. Two of them appeared in the Degas sale of 1918, one of which is the present sheet; a third was pasted by Degas into a notebook. Extremely rare impression from the unpolished plate.
