    Comments

The present pencil drawing was given to Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) by Alexander Archipenko. The contact between Archipenko and Giacometti was probably established by Francesco von Mendelsohn (1901-1972), the son of a Berlin banker and art collector, or Christoph Bernoulli (1897-1981), Alberto's school friend from his time at the Schiers school, who was friends with von Mendelsohn. Bernoulli was often a guest at the von Mendelsohn family home in Berlin-Grunewald, where Archipenko also visited. In the winter months of 1922/1923, Archipenko gave Giacometti the use of his Paris studio, where Giacometti worked alone during his absence (In: Stephan Kunz/Paul Müller, p. 71).
