    Comments

The present work is a study for the main painting of the first version of "Hoffnung" (Müller/Radlach 1902.09). "Die Hoffnung" is considered the most ambitious composition of Cuno Amiet's symbolist phase around the turn of the century. The title comes from the artist himself. Behind the title and the iconography lie biographical events. In spring 1901, when Amiet was working on the first version, his wife Anna was pregnant and posed as a model for the painting. At the end of September, the child was stillborn. This experience was the immediate reason for the new version of the painting, which was supplemented by the double allegory of death. It is now in the Kunstmuseum Olten (Müller/Radlach 1902.10). With the personal connection that Amiet never concealed, he intended to express a universal human condition of the fragility and transience of life: the interconnectedness of birth and death, of joy and pain, of light and shadow (In: Müller/Radlach, p. 192).
