    Condition

The image trimmed at the left and upper sheet edge, as the lithographic stone was not centreed. Verso with traces of old mounting. In very good and fresh condition

    Comments

This lithograph, printed by Ancourt in Paris, was produced using the special process of iris printing. This enabled the rainbow-like gradations of tone in the dancer's costume and in the background to be printed from a single stone simultaneously. After each printing process, the stone had to be re-inked with a roller charged with different colours. The silver and gold dust was then also applied wet-on-wet to the stone and printed, resulting in variations from print to print. This explains the different colour effects of the individual impressions.

Depicted on the stage, which is set diagonally into the image, is the dancer Loïe Fuller (1862-1928). She is performing her then world-famous 'Danse du Feu', patented in 1894. Born in Chicago, the actress and dancer had been performing at the 'Folies Bergères' since late 1892. In order to achieve the special lighting effects of the multi-coloured electric spotlight installed for the performance, she wore wide, flowing voile skirts and waved tulle veils high in the air on long sticks. These coloured light effects could be reproduced in the present work using the iris printing process (see: Adriani 10).
