    Comments

This sheet is one of the most beautiful colour lithographs from 1949, printed from the drawing stone in black and three different colour stones in mauve, malachite green and ochre. Of the present, final version, only a few artist's proofs and 50 numbered copies of the edition exist. Depicted is Françoise Gilot (1921-2023), Picasso's companion from 1943 to 1953, with a hairnet and green hair. While Fernand Mourlot lists four states in the catalogue raisonné, Felix Reusse's catalogue, 'Pablo Picasso. Die Lithographie', published to mark the opening of the Graphikmuseum Pablo Picasso Münster holding the Huizinga Collection in 2000, records ten reworked states of this print, as identified by Sebastian Goeppert. Fascinating portrait, executed in brush on zinc.
