    Comments

Vampir' (Norwegian 'Vampyr') is one of the central themes of Edvard Munch's Lebensfries. He created six paintings on this theme between 1893 and 1895, and a further twelve in a second phase between 1916 and 1925. In 1895, two prints were created: a pure lithograph ('Vampir I', Woll 40) and a lithograph that was later partly combined with a woodcut.

Munch's original title for this group of works was 'Liebe und Schmerz'. The artist experienced love in many forms; it encompassed both positive aspects such as affection, attraction and eroticism, as well as negative aspects such as jealousy or despair. For him, love was the connection of life with death, but also with eternity. In this respect, 'Vampir' plays an important transitional role in Munch's cosmos.

The second graphic version offered here is an outstanding, deep-black early impression of the drawing stone, printed in 1895 at 'M. W. Lassally Graphische Kunst-Anstalt, Berlin'. It was not until 1902 that Munch began to create coloured variants of the motif using lithography and woodcut.
