    Comments

With 'Schwarze Galle', Anselm Kiefer refers to the melancholic temperament of the ancient theory of the four humors (humoral pathology), which is traditionally associated with depth, melancholyand artistic reflection. The artist also wrote 'melancholia' in black at the bottom. The large-format work features a surface composed of lead and organic materials, reminiscent of empty landscapes. Kiefer uses heavy and symbolically charged materials. The lead becomes the bearer of history, the organic materials a sign of transience.

The picture surface appears like a sedimented memory, marked by cracks and fractures. In its density and weight, 'Schwarze Galle' evokes a contemplative, melancholic worldview between memory and destruction, between personal feeling and collective history - topics that Kiefer frequently addresses in his work. He is regarded as a renewer of history painting and as a major illustrator of historical catastrophes. In a mandala-like fashion, an organic loop meanders around a white, stylised crystal. The oxidised surface becomes transcendental painting and bathes the scene in a diffuse atmosphere.

Kiefer's work is exemplary of an art that does not depict history, but embodies it through materials: profound, poetic and at the same time deeply moving in its materiality.
