Landschaft mit Pappeln' belongs a group of plein air works created around 1893 that feature expansive meadows and trees on the horizon. The warm tones and the soft rendering of natural elements are characteristic of the stylistic features of Hodler's earlier landscapes and probably recall the landscapes he painted during his stay in Spain (1878/1879). The motif of individual trees or small groups of trees began with a small landscape painting from 1875, which, in terms of both painting style and composition, was still entirely under the influence of his Geneva teacher, Barthélemy Menn. Hodler's 'portraits of trees' include poplars, willows, chestnut trees and, occasionally, firs, maples or a birches. Our painting is a beautiful and typical example of this type of image.
