    Comments

In 1986, Franz Gertsch gave up painting for a few years in favour of woodcut. In this printmaking technique, he found the ideal medium to print a motif in various monochrome colour variations. He created the templates for his woodcuts using his own photographs, which he transferred onto the woodblock in a lengthy working process. Using a small gouge, he created a fine grid of 'light dots' that allowed the white paper, or sometimes the underprint of a colour plate in a different colour, to shine through when printed. The result is a grid structure reminiscent of pixels, from which the motif emerges. According to the catalogue 'Franz Gertsch - Retrospektive' from 2005/2006, the woman depicted is Vera von Siebenthal, born in 1973. The oversized presence of the portrait and the focus on the eye area give the work a 'magical' quality that is hard to resist.

Before each hand-printed impression, the plate was cleaned and re-inked. Each print was pulled by hand with the assistance of Nik Hausmann and always varied in colour and printing intensity, making each impression a unique piece. Only small editions were produced; of 'Vera', there are only 34 impressions. As a rule, only prints with the drawing plate are available. 24 prints are considered an 'edition', plus 10 trial proofs, such as the present example. The printing block was made of linden wood, and the present impression was executed in green. Unfortunately, the plate broke during the printing process, so that the edition remained at the exceptionally small number of 24 copies.

We thank the Gertsch family for the valuable information regarding this work.
