    Comments

In the 1970s, Francis' art continued to evolve. Large-format canvases became the stage for spontaneous acts of painting, in which expressiveness, transparency, chance and control were in constant interaction.

'Coming Over' presents an intense interplay of dynamic colour fields, dots and spontaneous movements, which is characteristic of the artist's expressive style.

The vibrant yet at times translucent palette allows the colours to flow into one another, while the irregular distribution and the tension between density and emptiness create a vibrant pictorial atmosphere. The colours appear to 'come over' the surface, which may have inspired the title of the work.

However, straight and grid-like elements are also visible on the canvas. Amid the excesses of colour, lines can be discerned that are not strictly geometric, but clear enough to create a structure. These lines provide a counterpoint to the organically appearing colour fields and convey rhythm and stability within the otherwise free composition. Thus, the dynamism of colour meets the control of structure.

Although Sam Francis dated the painting 1975 on the reverse, it is assumed that he continued working on it in 1976, as a studio assistant documented the work with the identification number SFP 76‑1.
