From the mid-1960s onwards, Sam Francis developed a new and consistent compositional style in Santa Monica, California, a style that was already inherent in his earlier works. During the intitial phase of these 'edge' paintings, to which the present painting also belongs, he began to extend the colour to the edges. An almost glaring white space dominates the centre. He used the primary colours blue, red and yellow, as well as green. However, the empty white space is not devoid of content; rather, it is a space for viewers themselves to fill. Francis is said to have stated that the white area was reserved for the viewers. The artist draws on the psychology of C. G. Jung to find deeper answers to personal and artistic questions. This is particularly evident in his 'mirror paintings'. The present, very harmonious painting was exhibited at the famous Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York in 1967. It remained in the artist's estate and is still in family ownership to this day.
