    Comments

Max Ernst is among the most versatile and fascinating artists of the 20th century. After his beginnings as a Dadaist in Cologne, he moved to Paris in 1922, where he became a pioneer of Surrealism. In 1941, he went to the United States. There, he found important inspiration and at the same time gave new impulses to a generation of young American artists. Max Ernst created an oeuvre that eludes any clear stylistic definition. The different phases of his work, themes and motifs are surprising. Throughout his life, the artist was a seeker and an inquisitive spirit, constantly expanding his artistic questions. Among other things, he was interested in ethnology, astronomy and the natural sciences, and allowed himself to be inspired by these subjects in his work. Not infrequently, creative chance also guided him. The sheet 'Wüstenrose' from 1954 shows a seated figure with raised arms, depicted with black lines and strokes: a kind of stylised desert rose. The choice of colours suggests that the picture was created under the impression of Max Ernst's stay in Arizona. In terms of content, it is probably a fantastic vision that originates from the unconscious and the hidden, and connects with the experiences of the present. Max Ernst also engaged with psychology and psychoanalysis. As a Surrealist, he thus established new, unexpected connections between his images and the perception of the viewer.
