    Comments

In the 1880s, the nude female figure became one of Degas' favourite subjects. He captured his models in intimate, everyday situations, such as washing, bathing, drying their feet or combing their hair. Whether working with pencil, charcoal or coloured pastels, Degas strove for a naturalistic depiction of the body and portrayed his models with unembellished realism. In his numerous nude studies, Degas rarely focussed on the face. The women were usually shown from behind. As with his depictions of dancers, the artist was primarily concerned with rendering the form, volume and movement of the body.

The present drawing comes from the collection of François Langof, a pianist, collector and patron who was deported to Auschwitz and died there in 1944. Isabel Goüin, who owned the drawing, was the sister of Ninon Vallin, a loyal friend of François Lang. She hid and preserved his music library, which is now in the possession of the Royaumont Foundation, founded by Isabel and her husband Henry Goüin.

'La toilette après le bain' is one of the preparatory works for the pastel 'Après le bain (Femme s'essuyant)', which Degas created around 1882 to 1885. It is considered one of the artist's most impressive nudes.
