Impeccable condition
This painting is most likely a scene from the Forêt de Fontainebleau, a place that inspired numerous 19th-century artists and which also attracted Corot on several occasions. In the foreground, we see a wood gatherer collecting branches at the edge of a forest. This figure exemplifies the simple, working people whom Corot knew how to embed in his landscapes. To the left edge of the painting, a bright, expansive landscape opens up, revealing a house and a pond. On the right side, the dense, dark edge of the forest extends.
It is a typical Corot composition, featuring an asymmetrical layout, a low horizon line and a soft, diffuse light that marks the transition between classical landscape painting and modern plein air painting.
