A small loss in the upper left corner of the wood panel, with fresh colours and overall in very good condition
Marc Chagall had been fascinated by the special light and vegetation of the Côte d'Azur since the 1920s. After returning from exile in America in 1950, he acquired the country estate 'Les Collines' in Vence, which was surrounded by beautiful trees, and set up a studio there. It was here that he created his first monumental works. The small painting offered in our sale is an atmospheric depiction with an impressive play of light and shadow. A couple in love lie beneath a lush bouquet of flowers, illuminated by a strong blue beam of light through the window. The flowers are probably the recurring 'pivoines' (peonies). Above them, an angel plays the violin, while at the lower left there is a rooster, which in Chagall's iconography symbolises life as a stage.
