Slight signs of wear and minimal surface dirt. Very fine, fresh condition
In 1958, the year of his major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Hans Arp created a series of works entitled 'Tête levant'. These compositions are made up of several painted layers of amorphous shapes, with oval cut-outs sawn into the uppermost layer. This tiered structure creates a subtle sense of spatial depth effect and offers the viewer a multi-layered, almost sculptural visual experience.
The combination of clear compositional order and freely flowing, biomorphic lines for which Arp is known is particularly evident here. The deliberate limitation to a reduced colour scheme of black, grey and a luminous yellow gives the work an iconic radiance, emphasising its meditative yet timeless character.
