    Comments

At the end of the 1950s, the American painter Sam Francis achieved international recognition. During this period, he developed his characteristic style with luminous colours, dynamic compositions and open white spaces. Inspired by Abstract Expressionism and his Parisian artist colleagues, he created works that celebrate light and movement. His art was increasingly exhibited in Europe and Japan, which solidified his worldwide influence.

In its free, open composition, the present watercolour strongly recalls the painting 'Paris Summer' created in the same year, not only in its choice of colours, but also in the way colour and space interact.

The sheet is imbued with a dancing rhythm: the luminous primary colours seem to float on the white of the paper, meeting and retreating from one another almost simultaneously. As in 'Paris Summer', the colours are not opaque, but applied in glazes, allowing the light to penetrate and creating depth as well as an almost fleeting sense of movement. Also typical of Francis's watercolours of the late 1950s is the balance between control and chance. The colours flow into each other in places, without fully blending, which gives the work a spontaneous and lively quality. The white of the paper acts as an active intermediary, 'breathing' between the colours, structuring the surface and giving the image a certain lightness. The watercolour shows an echo of 'Paris Summer' - less monumental, but just as powerful in its atmospheric effect.
