    Comments

Lying on a red blanket on the beach is a naked, muscular man with a beard. He looks like a god. In the background, the horizon separates the light blue sky from the slightly greenish-blue sea. Where his genitals should be, the artist has placed a small ballerina figure.

Thematically, the drawing takes up a subject that Magritte had considered in 1937 and recorded in a gouache from 1937 or 1938 (Sylvester 1133). Based on various small-format studies, documents and letters, it is known that Magritte planned a larger painting on this theme, which he probably never executed. Three years after creating the present drawing, he revisited the slightly altered theme in an oil painting from 1943 (Sylvester 528) and now called it 'L'Océan'. In this painting, the nude is depicted as a river god and the small female figure as Venus.

In 1938, Magritte commented on the subject in 'La Ligne de vie', a speech given in Antwerp, as follows: 'In "Le printemps éternel" a dancer replaces the genitals of Hercules lying by the sea.'

The drawing is fixed to the right inside of a sheet of laid paper. On the left side is the handwritten poem 'Opème', dedicated to Jean Paulhan and dated '27 August 1947'. Lower left, monogrammed in red, are the initials 'J.B.' According to Sylvester, the handwriting is by Joë Bousquet. On the front of the sheet is another handwritten poem, probably by Paul Éluard. Sylvester suspects that Magritte gave the drawing to Joë Bousquet when he visited him at his house in Carcassonne. Due to its small size, it may have been intended as an illustration for one of Bousquet's books.
