    Comments

Diego Giacometti was undoubtedly one of the most inventive and exciting furniture designers in post-war Paris. His distinctive style was characterised by elegant bronze furniture and furnishings. In addition to the classical, antique-inspired formal language, it was the almost magical menagerie of animals that populated his furniture that set him apart. Giraffes, ostriches, mice, owls, dogs, cats, deer and toads were among the animals that Diego incorporated into his designs, combining them in various ways. Eberhard W. Kornfeld recounted that clients could even request which animals they wanted to be immortalised on a piece of furniture. Diego kept boxes containing casts of the individual pieces, which he then arranged and mounted on tables or consoles. He then meticulously recorded the sales in a 'carnet' (notebook), and the finished piece of furniture could later be collected from the studio. The large candlestick offered here was made for a family from Grisons who were friends of his. The 'Candélabre navigateur' is very rare. Thus, Kornfeld did not miss the opportunity to acquire the piece, patinated in green tones, for his collection at an auction.
