supported with thin Japanese paper; the front in excellent condition
An exceptionally carefully executed sheet, with the unusual motif of the dovecote adding to its charm (see also the related sheets Beck 249A, 251A and 256, painted at the same time).
Once again, Goyen carefully balanced the composition. He placed the mainland opposite the body of water with the ships in the left half and placed the house in the centre, on which the towering dovecote marks the exact centre of the picture. Like the delicate and fragrant tree behind the house, the dovecote extends to the upper edge of the picture. A ladder-like staircase allows the boatmen to climb ashore next to the house. Van Goyen's great narrative joy is evident in all the carefully considered details.
