Mounted on the original album sheet of the John Barnard collection, with his monogram lower right; this repeated on the reverse with the collection number "no. 818". Barnard's own inscription in ink "John Barnard July 20th 1770" somewhat translucent in the sky at top right
The drawing is divided into two parts: the architectural view in the right-hand half is contrasted with a view into the distance in the left-hand half. In the background, simple buildings and a windmill contrast a the mighty church. The slightly desolate-looking church is in keeping with van Goyen's picturesque views of huts and cottages in other drawings.
The drawing has always been appreciated and valued by collectors, as can be seen from its prominent provenance.
