    Comments

This is undoubtedly an early print, and, as it belonged to Hibbert, from one of the most prominent Rembrandt collections. Nevertheless, it lacks any burr and it can be assumed that the sheet is printing waste. In order to prevent old ink residue from sticking to the printing plate, which had to be re-inked before each impression, it was occasionally run through the press a second or third time without re-inking, which always led to results that were still quite respectable. Always with an eye to sales, such successful waste prints by Rembrandt were evidently kept and in this way even found their way into such quality-conscious collections as that of George Hibbert.

Jan Lutma, who was born in Groningen in 1584 and died in 1669, the same year as Rembrandt , was one of the most famous goldsmiths in Amsterdam. Rembrandt depicts Lutma, who was already 72 years old in 1656, in a leather-upholstered armchair, which was certainly part of the studio's furnishings and on which he also placed other sitters from this period, such as "The Old Haaringh", painted around 1655, and "Arnold Tholinx", painted around 1656.
