    Comments

Joseph of Arimathea watches the body of Jesus being laid in the tomb originally intended for himself. The sheet belongs to a group of etchings dedicated to the life of Jesus. Here Rembrandt was clearly experimenting with different types of paper and the effect of differently wiped plate colours. In the third state, Rembrandt lightened the composition a little so that, for example, the skulls can be seen again. The body of Jesus emerging from the darkness and the sparsely lit figures around him make this etching a masterpiece of chiaroscuro.
