Condition

Quite excellent impression, still accentuated with burr throughout. With narrow paper margin. Two barely visible vertical folds in the centre of the sheet, a small repair in the paper margin lower left and unevenness in the two upper corners caused by old mounting rebates; otherwise the sheet is in very fine and unpressed overall condition

Comments

Rembrandt depicted the landscape near Haarlem from an elevated position like a panorama. The silhouette of the city can be seen on the left, the Saxenburg estate of Christoffel Thijsz. in the centre and the church of Bloemendaal on the right. The situation is actually a mirror image, which Rembrandt did not take into account when executing the etching.

The title of the etching goes back to Valerius Röver and Edmé-François Gersaint, who erroneously attributed the estate to the tax collector Johann Uytenbogaert, whom Rembrandt had depicted as a gold weigher.

Zustand

Ganz ausgezeichneter Druck, durchweg noch mit Grat akzentuiert. Mit schmalem Papierrändchen. Zwei kaum sichtbare vertikale Falten in der Blattmitte, eine kleine Ausbesserung im Papierrand unten links und von alten Montierfälzen bedingte Unebenheiten in den beiden oberen Ecken; sonst ist das Blatt in einem insgesamt sehr schönen und unverpressten Gesamtzustand

Erläuterungen

Panoramaartig gab Rembrandt von erhöhter Position die Landschaft bei Haarlem wieder. Links ist die Silhouette der Stadt zu erkennen, in der Mitte das Landgut Saxenburg des Christoffel Thijsz., rechts die Kirche von Bloemendaal. Tatsächlich stellt sich die Situation spiegelbildlich dar, was Rembrandt bei der Ausführung der Radierung nicht berücksichtigte.

Der Titel der Radierung geht auf Valerius Röver und Edmé-François Gersaint zurück, die das Landgut irrtümlich dem Steuereinnehmer Johann Uytenbogaert zuordneten, den Rembrandt als Goldwäger dargestellt hatte.
