    Provenance

Collection Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein, Maihingen and Harburg, Lugt 2715a

Auction C.G. Boerner, Leipzig, 28 May 1935, lot 289 (described there as "Splendid, with plate tone, with about 5 mm margin, rarely so beautiful")

Galerie Kornfeld, Bern, acquired in 1997

The Eberhard W. Kornfeld Collection, Bern, Lugt 913b, acquired 2010

    Condition

Quite excellent impression with fine plate tone; the structure in the sky behind the mill clearly visible, as desired in early prints. In immaculately untouched condition with only a few pale stains which in no way detract from the overall impression. With approx. 4 mm surrounding margin. Rare in this form

    Comments

Rembrandt depicts a modern windmill with only the upper part turning in the wind. In 1915, Frits Lugt was able to prove that Rembrandt depicted the mill on the Passeerder Bulwark in Amsterdam, for which he certainly made studies, but which have not survived. He may have been particularly fascinated by the somewhat desolate impression of the buildings.

The craquelure in the centre of the picture is due to damage to the etching ground, while the light grey haze in the sky is probably the result of the direct application of sulphur toning, which has a two-dimensional effect and is to some extent a precursor to aquatint.
