This very beautiful portrait from 1635, created one year after his marriage to Saskia van Uylenburgh in Amsterdam, has not yet been precisely identified. Tradition has it that she was the daughter of Ephraim Bonus, the Amsterdam doctor whom Rembrandt portrayed in 1647. Landsberger in "Rembrandt, the Jews and the Bible", Philadelphia 1946, points out that a Jewish bride awaits her bridegroom with her hair down and a ketubah in her hand. Rembrandt connoisseurs such as Valentiner, Weisbach and Benesch thought they could recognise Minerva or a sibyl. Earlier authors believed in a portrait of Saskia, and a portrait of Rembrandt's sister was also considered. The sheet was certainly in Rembrandt's "assortment of prints" for a long time because, despite the fact that the plate was lost early on, prints are not very rare; it must have been quite popular during Rembrandt's lifetime. Nowell-Usticke lists it as "C 1".

Erläuterungen

Das sehr schöne Portrait aus dem Jahre 1635, ein Jahr nach der Heirat mit Saskia van Uylenburgh in Amsterdam geschaffen, konnte bis heute nicht genau bestimmt werden. Alter Tradition nach soll es sich um die Tochter von Ephraim Bonus handeln, dem Amsterdamer Arzt, den Rembrandt 1647 portraitiert hat. Landsberger in "Rembrandt, the Jews and the Bible", Philadelphia 1946, weist darauf hin, dass eine jüdische Braut ihren Bräutigam mit fallendem Haar und der Ketubah in der Hand erwarte. Rembrandt-Kenner wie Valentiner, Weisbach und Benesch glaubten Minerva bzw. eine Sibylle erkennen zu können. Frühere Autoren glaubten an ein Portrait von Saskia, auch ein Portrait von Rembrandts Schwester wurde in Erwägung gezogen. Das Blatt war sicherlich lange in Rembrandts "Graphik-Sortiment", denn, trotz dem Umstand, dass die Platte früh verloren ging, sind Drucke nicht von grosser Seltenheit; es muss zu Rembrandts Lebzeiten recht beliebt gewesen sein. Bei Nowell-Usticke wird es mit "C 1" aufgeführt.
