    Comments

Rare, the plate was lost early, there are no late prints. Purchased by the Parisian collector Pierre Mariette during the artist's lifetime, proof of the early appreciation of Rembrandt's prints in Parisian collecting circles. A rare contemporary document.

During his time in Leiden between c. 1628 and 1631, Rembrandt, following Jacques Callot, created a series of depictions of beggars, most of which are small-format and do not specify the location. Unlike Callot, however, the prints are not conceived as a series but as individual sheets.
