15.3x10.6 cm, sheet size
Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 73
Meder 36/I/b (of c/II)

Excellent impression in impeccable condition. With approx. 2 mm paper margin around the platemark
Created in the same year as Dürer's "Melencolia I", this extremely subtle print shows many surprising affinities with Dürer's master engraving. Even the overall compositional arrangement of the robed figure sitting pensively on a step is comparable, as is the brilliantly subtly engraved drapery. Here, the putto on the millstone has been transformed into the Christ Child, and even details such as the keys hanging from the belt and the purse can be found on both sheets. The latter is particular striking, as depictions of the Virgin Mary are rarely adorned with such earthly accessories.

Ausgezeichneter Druck in tadelloser Erhaltung.
