The present work belongs to the group of works known as the "Birkenbilder", which Lichtsteiner executed from 1997 to 2001. For the first time, the artist used a reduced colour palette characterised by nuances between black and white, which he continued in the subsequent "Berg" cycle of works. In the motif of the birch bark, Lichtsteiner saw an analogy to painting itself: just as the bark covers the tree trunk as a shell, the colour covers the canvas as a layer of skin.

Erläuterungen

Die vorliegende Arbeit gehört in die Werkgruppe der sogenannten "Birkenbilder", die Lichtsteiner von 1997 bis 2001 ausführte. Erstmals beschränkte sich der Künstler in seinem Schaffen auf eine reduzierte, von Nuancen zwischen Schwarz und Weiss geprägte Farbpalette, die er im darauffolgenden Werkzyklus "Berg" fortsetzte. Im Motiv der Birkenrinde sah Lichtsteiner eine Analogie zur Malerei selbst: So wie die Rinde als Hülle den Baumstamm bedeckt, so bedeckt die Farbe als Hautschicht die Leinwand.
